Ultrasonography of peripheral nerves

Accurate neural diagnostics with high resolution ultrasound

Ultrasonography of peripheral nerves is a safe, painless and extremely informative examination technique that allows the assessment of neural structures, their damage and their interaction with surrounding tissue. In our clinic, this examination is conducted with premium hardware that provides ultra-high image resolution — it also allows the physician to see the finer changes in the neural structure.

Why is this examination special?

One of the most significant benefits of ultrasonography is the ability to:

  • accurately locate the lesion site, at the exact point where the patient feels pain or tingling,
  • during the exam, contact the patient asking them to make movements (such as moving their fingers, bending their elbow or straightening their palm) that help them assess the functional condition of the nerve in so-called “risk positions” where it may be compressed or stretched,
  • see how the nerve behaves in motion — it’s impossible to evaluate that with other radiological methods, such as MRT.

When is neural ultrasonography recommended?

  • If there is tingling of arms or legs, pain, numbness
  • In case of suspected carpal channel syndrome, ulnar or peroneal neuropathy
  • After injury to evaluate the nerve for damage or inflammation
  • After operations to evaluate the nerve healing process
  • For the evaluation of the state of nerves following medication or physical therapy

Duration of examination

30-50 minutes

Preparation

Not required

Feelings

The examination is completely painless

Restrictions

None – also suitable for children and pregnant women

Results

The conclusion is delivered immediately after the exam

Consultation at the same time as the examination

We combine diagnostics with a neurologist consultation to immediately evaluate the finding of the examination and agree on the most appropriate treatment or follow-up plan. That’s how you’ll get a response in one clinic visit – quickly, accurately and personally.

Diagnostic principles

The following shall be carefully evaluated during ultrasonography:

  • the shape, contours, internal structure of the nerve,
  • relationship of surrounding tissues (muscles, tendons, blood vessels) to the nerve,
  • possible compression points,
  • signs of inflammation, trauma or oedema.

The doctor moves the probe through the affected area indicated by the patient and monitors the neural structures on the ultrasound screen in real time. If necessary, measurements, comparison with symmetrical side and appropriate conclusion shall be made.
