Sleep specialist – somnologist at NeiroMed clinic helps you understand why sleep doesn’t provide rest.
When sleep is no longer rest
Sleep is a subtle biological process, its disorder affects not only well-being, but cardiovascular health, metabolism and mental state. Sleep disorders are common – they are regularly experienced by up to 30% of adults. Untreated sleep disorders can lead to depression, high blood pressure, circulatory problems in the brain (stroke), diabetes and road accidents.
Somnologist (sleep specialist) is a doctor who evaluates sleep structure, investigates disorders and helps return balance to life through quality sleep.
When should you go to a sleep specialist?
- pronounced drowsiness during the day – falling asleep while driving or working.
- snoring, stopping breath while asleep (sleep apnea suspected),
- difficulty falling asleep or keeping asleep.
- restless legs, which interferes with falling asleep (restless legs syndrome).
- nightmares, sleep talking, sleepwalking, kicking at night.
- sleep rhythm disorder – late bedtime or awakening too early.
- insomnia, which disrupts quality of life over several weeks.
Sometimes sleep disorders are not an isolated disease, but an expression of another disease. Sleep disorders are typical of anxiety, depression, Parkinson’s disease, chronic pain, and other chronic diseases. Therefore, sleep evaluation can be an important step in diagnosing various neurological diseases.
How do I prepare for a visit?
- Fill in your sleep diary 1-2 weeks before your visit – this will help your doctor understand your sleep habits.
- Consider and record your complaints – what symptoms are interfering with and how long.
- Take previous examinations (blood tests, EEG, MR, if available) with you.
- Prepare a list of the medications you are taking.
- If possible, bring in a co-person who can tell you about your behaviour during sleep.
