Psychiatrist: a reliable guide to the emotional balance
For everyone in life, there may come a moment when the mental balance twists – sleep becomes fragile, depressing thoughts emerge, the heart beats too fast, or quite the opposite – everything seems colourless and heavy. At such times, a psychiatrist – a doctor specialising in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of mental disorders – may help, based on scientific principles and respectful, confidential treatment.
When is it worth going to a psychiatrist?
You should not hesitate to seek help if you have the following sensations:
- depression or depressive mood that doesn’t pass for several weeks,
- anxiety or panic attacks, especially if they interfere with everyday life,
- difficulty sleeping – insomnia, excessive early waking, or excessive daytime sleepiness
- chronic fatigue, loss of interest, difficulty concentrating,
- appetite disorders – both uncontrolled overeating and appetite loss
- difficulty adjusting to life change, loss, divorce pain,
- internal anxiety or a sense that “something’s wrong,” but it’s hard to explain.
A psychiatrist’s advice can be the first step toward recovery. A psychiatrist will help you understand what is happening and will suggest the most appropriate solutions – these are not always medicines.
Visit: How does it go?
The first meeting with a psychiatrist is a conversation in a climate of trust. There are no ratings or condemnation here – just a careful hearing. In the conversation, the doctor gets to know:
- current complaints,
- life events that might be related to emotional state,
- health history and previous treatment,
- medications used so far, their tolerability and effect.
If necessary, the psychiatrist may also recommend additional examinations (e.g. blood tests, electroencephalography, etc.) to exclude somatic causes.
What does a psychiatrist offer?
Based on diagnosis, your doctor offers:
- medication therapy (antidepressants, tranquillisers, mood stabilisers, etc.), if necessary,
- psychotherapeutic support or referral to a psychotherapist,
- lifestyle change recommendations such as sleep normalisation or stress management techniques.
Important: a psychiatrist is not just a “prescriber.” He is an interlocutor who can also be entrusted with what you cannot or does not want to say to relatives. Everything spoken remains between the patient and the doctor – both the code of ethics and the law protect it. A psychiatrist doesn’t make or maintain specific patient lists – it’s just a society myth.
Prejudice - still existing
Unfortunately, many still feel unsafe seeking psychiatrist help. These days, however, mental health problems affect one in four people at least once in their lives. A psychiatrist is not a “last resort” doctor, but an accessible and needed support resource for everyday complications.
The World Health Organization stresses that seeking early help reduces suffering and improves quality of life.
