Neurosonologist in Riga: consultations and examinations

We rarely think about the importance of seamless operation of our blood vessels – the constant supply of oxygen to the brain that sustains vital functions and allows us to live fully. If symptoms such as dizziness, headache or sudden fatigue occur, it may be worth checking the health of the blood vessels in your head or neck. A neurosonologist, a specialist who, using modern ultrasonography technology, can see what is not visible to the naked eye, can help this.

Who is a neurosonologist?

Neurosonologist is a physician specializing in ultrasonography examinations of the blood vessels of the head and neck by a special duplex scanning (DUPLEX) technique. It allows to see the structure of the blood vessels and analyze the flow, direction and speed of the blood at the same time. This approach helps detect blood vessel constrictions, vascular wall damage, atherosclerosis, clots and other circulatory problems in a timely manner, which can be a precursor to serious illnesses.

When is the ultrasound examination recommended?

Ultrasonography of the blood vessels of the head and neck by duplex scanning is recommended when it is necessary to diagnose:

  • atherosclerosis,
  • blood pressure diseases,
  • increased blood cholesterol
  • unclear headache
  • dizziness, fainting,
  • transient neurological symptoms (e.g. transient circulatory disorders)
  • after a stroke,
  • before planned surgery.

How is the duplex scanning performed?

The patient should free the collar area from clothing and jewellery. The examination is carried out in a lying position on the back. Gel is used in the examined area. Initially, the doctor evaluates the blood vessels of the neck, then the head, or intracerebral blood vessels, through the bone of the temples, and finally evaluates the blood vessels of the back of the head. It should be noted that to fully assess the blood vessels of the neck, it is necessary to examine them both at the initial stage (neck) and at the final stage in the head. The sensitivity and specificity of the transcranial Doppler (DUPLEX) method for the evaluation of intracerebral arteries may reach 94-100% and 99-100%. It’s especially useful for identifying blood vessel constrictions in the brain.

During the examination:

  1. the thickness of the vessel wall and the composition of cholesterol plates is measured;
  2. to detect blood vessel constrictions, clots, or dissections, the direction, speed, and type of blood flow is determined.
  3. flow recovery after stroke or brain injury is assessed.

Neiromed Astra, at 8b Gunara Astras Street, offers head and neck duplex scanning (B-mode + Doppler mode) as well as transcranial dopplerography (TCD/TCCS).

The examinations are non-invasive, painless and safe, suitable for both patients with symptoms and preventive testing at all ages.

They provide valuable information before planned surgeries and after a stroke to evaluate the effectiveness of blood flow recovery.
