Neurography and electromyography (EMG)

Neurography and electromyography (EMG): accurate nerve and muscle examinations at NeiroMed clinic

Electromyography (EMG) and neurography are state-of-the-art and clinically accurate methods that help evaluate nervous impulse conductivity and muscle disorders. These examinations are particularly important in cases where the patient has tingling, numbness, muscle weakness or pain, and it is necessary to ascertain precisely the origin of the symptoms, whether the cause is peripheral nerves, muscles or communication between them (synapses).

What can be detected by EMG and neurography?

These examinations help to diagnose:

  • Muscle diseases: myopathy, myositis, muscle dystrophies
  • Nervous diseases: carpal channel syndrome, various neuropathies
  • Synapse disorders: myasthenia
  • Damage to nerve radicles caused by vertebral and intervertebral discs
  • Damage to motor neurons: amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), etc.

How is the examination going?

During electromyography:

  • The neurologist inserts a very thin needle electrode into the muscle to record its electrical activity at rest and motion.
  • In some cases (such as neurography), surface electrodes are used to assess the rate of nervous conduction.
  • A little electrical stimulation is also performed to accurately analyse the nerve response.

While the examination can cause some discomfort, it is short-time and well-tolerated and is done by an experienced specialist.

Duration of examination

20-50 minutes

Preparation

Wash, but do not use lotions or creams on the day of the examination. Inform your doctor about the medication you are taking, the presence of a pacemaker or other implanted electrical apparatus, blood clotting disorders (e.g. haemophilia), infectious diseases, or skin inflammation in the examination sites. Before the procedure, your doctor will explain the nature of the examination and answer your questions, you will sign a consent form.

Feelings

Electromyography and neurography are low-risk examinations. In rare cases, the following exam complications may occur: minor bleeding at the needle site, temporary discomfort or muscle sensitivity, extremely rare infection or nerve irritation. The NeiroMed clinic uses disposable electrodes, following the highest safety standards.

Results

The neurologist provides a conclusion immediately after the examination. The examination can be combined with a neurologist's consultation on the same day.
