These days, people travel more often and more widely than ever. Consequently, the risk of various infections, including in exotic destinations, is also increasing, and right here in Latvia. An infectologist is a doctor who helps detect, treat and prevent infectious diseases in a timely manner, as well as adapt the vaccination calendar individually.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) says early diagnosis and effective infection control can significantly reduce suffering, mortality and healthcare costs.
Competence of the infectologist
The infectologist specializes in the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of infectious diseases — from acute respiratory infections to complex diseases such as HIV, hepatitis, tropical infections and zoonoses. Infections can spread in different ways — through human contact, air, contaminated food or water, animal bites or blood.
When to go to an infectologist?
It is recommended that an infectologist be contacted if:
- There are unclear symptoms: prolonged fever, rash, fatigue, gastrointestinal problems.
- Chronic infection care (HIV, hepatitis B/C, tuberculosis) is required.
- A planned trip to infection risk regions – the infectologist provides vaccination and infection prevention recommendations.
During consultations the infectologist shall:
- listen to complaints, study previous test findings,
- recommend additional examinations, if necessary (blood tests, microbiology, imaging, etc.),
- recommend a course of treatment or vaccinations,
- make recommendations on preventing infections at home or on a trip.
Why is this important?
WHO states up to 70% of infections in healthcare can be prevented if infection control guidelines and precautions are followed. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention also stresses that early treatment helps prevent disease progression and severe complications.
