Head Impulse test (vHIT)

Head Impulse test (vHIT): accurate and rapid diagnosis of dizziness at NeiroMed clinic

The video head impulse test (vHIT) is a modern, accurate and completely painless way to determine the cause of dizziness. Currently, the NeiroMed Clinic is one of the rare places in the Baltics where this examination is conducted in daily clinical practice under the supervision of highly qualified specialists.

The vHIT makes it possible to distinguish whether the cause of dizziness is in the vestibular apparatus of the inner ear, or whether it is related to neurological pathology such as stroke, brain damage or tumour. This avoids unnecessary examinations and immediately starts appropriate treatment.

What is a head impulse test (vHIT)?

vHIT, or video head impulse test, is a non-invasive diagnostic test that evaluates head-eye coordination — a vestibular-ocular reflex (VOR). This reflex is responsible for the ability to maintain vision stability during movement. If disturbed, balance problems and dizziness arise.

During the test, the patient puts on special high-precision video glasses that record eye movements. The doctor gently and rapidly turns the patient’s head in a certain direction. The device fixes eye movements and the information obtained allows to accurately assess whether the vestibular system works symmetrically and efficiently.

Why choose this examination?

  • The only method that quickly and objectively assesses the function of the vestibular apparatus
  • Allows serious neurological abnormalities such as stroke to be ruled out
  • Accurate diagnosis means targeted and effective treatment
  • Helps avoid unnecessary, expensive or invasive examinations

How is the examination taking place at the NeiroMed clinic?

The examination is conducted by a neurotolaryngologist – an ear, nose and throat doctor with deep experience in neurology. Collaborating with neurologists allows the results to be integrated into a common treatment plan and gives the patient clear instructions for action after the examination.

Duration of examination

About 20 minutes

Preparation

Not required

Feelings

Painless, but some patients may experience short-term discomfort

Restrictions

None – suitable for a wide range of patients

Results

The doctor will give an oral and written opinion on the results of the examination

After the examination: What to expect?

The doctor will give an oral and written opinion on the results of the examination, as well as:

  • recommend further examinations (if necessary),
  • draw up a treatment plan,
  • will recommend vestibular exercises to improve balance without medication.

Well diagnosed dizziness not only improves quality of life but also reduces anxiety and prevents mistreatment.

Did you know?

Recent clinical studies have shown that the cause of around 70 per cent of dizziness lies in the vestibular system of the inner ear rather than in the brain or heart. However, only objective testing can prove this with certainty.
