Examination of the head and neck blood vessels (DUPLEX)
Examination of the head and neck blood vessels with colour coded dopplerography (DUPLEX)
The NeiroMed clinic offers a state-of-the-art, non-invasive and high-precision examination — doplerography scan of the head and neck blood vessels that combines classic ultrasonography with the colour Doppler method. The examination is conducted by experienced neurologists with specialization in neurovascular diagnostics.
It is also possible to obtain advice from a neurologist as needed for an examination carried out, but this must be stated in good time.
Duration of examination
About 30 minutes
Preparation
No special preparation is required. Preferably arriving in comfortable clothing with no jewellery
Feelings
The exam is painless, non-invasive and comfortable for the patient. Special gel is applied to the skin, and the probe is moved around the examination area - the front of the neck bilaterally, the temples bilaterally and the back of the head
Restrictions
There are no restrictions. The exam can be performed in patients of different ages, including for prevention purposes
Advantages of the method
- High image resolution and accuracy
- Dynamic estimate of blood flow rate and direction
- Capable of detecting both congenital and acquired vascular changes
- No radiation or contrast – also suitable for patients with kidney disease or allergies
Diagnostic principles
Ultrasonography of the head and neck blood vessels with colour-coded dopplerography allows assessment of:
- Anatomical structure of vessels — diameter, curves, loops, branches
- Rate and direction of blood flow — with the possibility to detect constrictions, blockages, turbulence
- Vascular wall condition – thickening, atherosclerotic plaques or changes indicating an increased risk of stroke
The probe is being directed along the neck and head area. The ultrasonography visualizes both vessel structure and real-time flow through colour coding. In this way, it is possible to assess the quality of the blood supply in the brain.
When is the examination recommended?
Ultrasonography of the head and neck blood vessels is recommended if you have:
- Frequent headaches or dizziness
- Noise in the head or ears
- Loss of consciousness or fainting
- Fluctuations in blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Suspected atherosclerosis or metabolic disorders
- Spinal cervical spondylosis
- Suffered stroke or micro stroke
- Head or neck injuries
Role of the examination in assessing stroke risk
During the life acquired changes in blood vessels, such as:
- thickening of arterial walls,
- atherosclerotic plaques,
- partial or total vascular occlusion,
are associated with a significantly increased risk of stroke. Early diagnosis helps prevent life-threatening complications.
A full assessment of the brain’s circulation requires an examination of both the neck and the inside blood vessels of the head. Pathologies are often detected directly in the arteries of the neck, which supply blood to the brain.
If additional diagnostics are required
In some cases, your doctor may recommend further examinations:
- CTA (computer tomographic angiography)
- MRI (magnetic resonance angiography)
- DSA (Digital subtraction angiography – specialized invasive radiology procedure)
These methods allow additional detailed examination of blood vessels using contrast agent as appropriate.
