Electroencephalography (EEG)
Electroencephalography (EEG) is a non-invasive diagnostic technique that records brain electrical activity, or “brain waves,” using special electrodes attached to the scalp. The examination allows the doctor to observe the nature of brain function both at rest and in response to various irritations (such as flashing light or breathing exercises).
EEG helps diagnose multiple neurological diseases and functional disorders, including epilepsy, impaired consciousness, sleep problems, changes in brain function after a stroke or head injury.
When is the EEG performed?
EEG is recommended in the following cases:
- Suspected epilepsy or other seizure-like illnesses
- Unconscious episodes, loss of consciousness
- Behavioural and sleep disorders (including in children)
- Stroke, brain injury or tumours
- Evaluation of changes in brain function in Alzheimer’s disease or dementia
- Assessment after initiation or modification of seizure therapy
How is the examination performed?
The EEG examination is conducted by an experienced specialist or trained nurse. During the procedure:
- Electrodes (small metal disks with wires) that record the electrical potential produced by brain cells are attached to the scalp.
- The patient is in a relaxed, comfortable position with his eyes closed.
- After the initial background record, stimulation tests may be carried out, such as:
- Photo-stimulation (bright flashing of light)
- Hyper-ventilation (fast breathing for 3 minutes).
For the duration of the examination, electrical activity is recorded and stored so that the physician can analyse the findings in detail later.
After the procedure, the electrodes are removed, and the electrode fixation paste is washed. It may sometimes be necessary to wash your hair repeatedly at home.
Duration of examination
About 45-60 minutes
Preparation
For the most accurate EEG results, please follow the prep recommendations: wash your hair with shampoo the night before (don't use conditioner, hairspray or oils). Do not fast before the examination – low sugar levels may affect the results. 8-12 hours before the examination - avoid taking caffeine (coffee, tea, chocolate, energy drinks). Tell your doctor if you are taking any medicines and supplements. Your doctor may recommend special preparation instructions, depending on your state of health or the purpose of your examination.
Feelings
Completely painless and non-invasive; Does not physically cause discomfort; In rare cases, patients with epilepsy may develop seizures during stimulation; therefore, the examination is always carried out under the supervision of specialists.
Results
The results are analysed under the guidance of an experienced neurologist, and the conclusion is prepared within 7-30 working days, depending on the complexity of the examination and the need for further evaluation.
Is EEG a safe procedure?
Yes. EEG has been used in clinical practice for more than 80 years and is considered one of the safest methods of brain examination.
- It causes no pain, does not use radiation and does not affect the deepest brain tissue
- Electrodes only record – does not act on the brain
- Seizure provocation (very rare) is controlled and predicted in specific situations
Before the examination, your doctor will explain the procedure, listen to your questions and inform you what to do in the particular case.
