ECG Holter monitoring (24-168 h)
Reliable and safe method for evaluating changes in heart rhythm in everyday life
Holter monitoring is a long-term recording of an electrocardiogram (ECG) that allows you to continuously record your heart’s electrical activity in 24 to 168 hours. This method helps detect heart rhythm disorders, their frequency, duration, and possible causes of malfunction, such as changes in cardiac muscle blood supply (trophics).
The examination is completely non-invasive, painless and does not cause any health harm and can be performed in patients of different ages – from young people to seniors, as well as professional athletes and patients with serious heart disease.
When is ECG Holter monitoring recommended?
ECG monitoring is recommended if there are:
- complaints of rapid or irregular heartbeat (arrhythmias),
- dizziness, fainting, blinking in front of your eyes,
- weakness in the morning or increased fatigue during the day,
- heart premature contractions or pain during physical/emotional exercise
- slow pulse or shortness of breath.
The examination is also useful for:
- high-risk professionals (pilots, drivers, firefighters),
- athletes to assess cardiac function during exercise and rest,
- prophylactic if there is a history of heart disease or persistent vague complaints.
Examination progress
- The device setup and patient training take approximately 30 minutes.
- Monitoring shall take place within 24-168 hours, as instructed by the physician.
- Disposable electrodes connected to a small portable receiver are attached to the patient’s chest.
- The device is lightweight, discreet and easy to wear, allowing you to maintain your usual daily rhythm.
During monitoring, it is recommended to record a wellness diary (complaints, physical activity, medication use, etc.) so that the findings can be further interpreted.
After the observation period, the device is removed, and the data is analysed so that the doctor can draw up an accurate conclusion.
Advantages of the method
- Completely harmless and painless;
- Allows heart rate to be assessed in real life rhythm, not just in a state of rest;
- Provide extensive information on frequency and duration of rhythm disorders;
- Particularly useful in cases of episodic complaints which cannot be stated in a short ECG record;
- Suitable for both diagnosis and evaluation of treatment effectiveness.
Results
The data shall be analysed by a certified physician. The opinion preparation time depends on the duration of ECG Holter monitoring.
Based on the ECG entry, it is possible to:
- identify and classify rhythm disorders (e.g. atrial fibrillation, extrasystoles, blockades),
- assess changes in cardiac muscular trophics, or potential circulatory disorders,
- develop an appropriate treatment or follow-up plan.
