Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo
Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is one of the most common diseases in the vestibular system (inner ear), which can lead to an unpleasant sense of dizziness and balance disturbance. The condition is benign and not life-threatening, but anyone who has experienced it knows how unpleasant it can interfere with daily mobility and safety. Vertigo is called motion sensation when the body is not in motion.
When the BPPV begins, daily life may feel significantly disrupted – often after a certain head position, or a change in body condition (rising from a lying position or turning on the other side in bed) is felt short-lived but powerful dizziness. It is a natural and benign response that can cause stress and confusion in the event of BPPV disease but can be effectively overcome with the right help.
What are the symptoms of Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo?
Associated discomfort usually takes the form of temporary but pronounced and unpleasant dizziness, that occurs suddenly after a change in position of the head or body.
May also be observed:
- vertigo or feeling the environment twisting or swinging;
- abnormal sensations or nausea;
- worsening coordination or falls that have occurred accidentally.
How do I know if this BPPV?
Your doctor collects medical history data and conducts specially designed tests such as the Dix-Hallpike test, which allows you to easily and safely determine if symptoms are associated with benign paroxysmal posture dizziness. This is a painless and rapid test during which a specialist monitors the movements and reactions of your eyes to accurately determine the cause of the disorder.
