Arrhythmologist – guardian of heart rhythm who should be approached in time
Unusual heartbeats – too fast, too slow or irregular – are not just unpleasant feelings. These can be signs of dangerous health problems. Heart rhythm disorders, or arrhythmias, affect circulation, can lead to stroke, heart failure or even life-threatening situations.
If you feel palpitations, dizziness, loss of consciousness or shortness of breath – don’t delay, make an appointment with the arrhythmologist!
What does an arrhythmologist do?
An arrhythmologist is a cardiologist with deep specialization in the diagnosis and treatment of heart rhythm disorders. He:
- performs electrocardiogram (ECG) and echocardiography,
- orders Holter monitoring, load tests or electrophysiological examinations,
- if necessary, recommends catheter ablation or insertion of pacemaker.
Only a specialist can assess whether symptoms indicate fibrillation, bradycardia, extrasystoles or other serious heart disease affecting quality of life and its duration.
How should I prepare for a visit to an arrhythmologist?
For the physician to be able to provide the most accurate assistance, the patient should preferably:
- Prepare a description of symptoms – when, how often, how long and what complaints appear.
- Take previous ECG results with you, as well as descriptions of other exams and expert statements.
- Draw up a list of the medicinal products used, including the vitamins and supplements used.
- The day before the visit, avoid caffeine, alcohol, stress and severe physical activity.
Why is arrhythmia dangerous?
Arrhythmia may seem only mild discomfort, but in the long run:
- disrupts circulation, reduces oxygen supply to brain and heart;
- increases the risk of stroke and heart failure;
- in some cases, causes sudden loss of consciousness or even sudden death.
Special attention should be paid to atrial fibrillation, which often occurs without symptoms but increases the risk of stroke up to five times.
Modern treatment options
Besides medicines, non-medicinal approaches are increasingly used:
- Catheter ablation – an effective, minimally invasive procedure that often allows long-term medication to be discarded.
- Implantable heart rhythm devices such as pacemakers or defibrillators.
- Long-term heart rate monitors – less frequent or short-term arrhythmias are diagnosed.
Times have changed - don't postpone your visit!
If once a doctor said you had to “live with” heart palpitations, today he may have a different answer. Science is evolving and modern arrhythmology offers methods that help you get your life back to its fullest without constant medication or anxiety.
Prophylactic – an arrhythmologist can also help prevent disease development by recommending lifestyle adjustments: blood pressure control, cholesterol and sugar monitoring, regular physical activity (walking, swimming, cycling).
Need specialist help?
The cause of rapid fluctuations in heart rhythm can be a serious illness. If the cause of arrhythmia is unclear, it is advisable to see a doctor, preferably an arrhythmologist.
