Algologist – specialist in pain treatment

Pain is a complex, multidimensional symptom that signals the body’s disorder or illness and can be both acute and chronic. While acute pain often fades with the treatment of the disease, chronic pain can persist for months or even years, significantly impairing quality of life. In such cases assistance should be provided by an algologist – doctor specialised in the diagnosis and treatment of pain.

Who is an algologist?

The algologist is a doctor who treats various types of pain, especially those that are not easily preventable by traditional methods. Most often, algologists are anaesthetists, neurologists or specialists of other profiles with additional training in algology. They conduct a thorough examination of the patient, identify pain mechanisms and develop an individualized therapy plan that can include both medication treatment and physical therapy, invasive procedures or psychological support.

The algologist’s assistance is required in the following cases:

  • back and neck pain
  • chronic joint and muscle pain (e.g. osteoarthritis, fibromyalgia)
  • post-operative or post-traumatic pain
  • chronic headache, including migraine
  • pelvic pain due to urological and gynaecological problems
  • oncological pain
  • neuropathic pain (e.g. after herpes infection)
  • trigeminal neuralgia and other pain syndromes.

The importance of chronic pain

European studies show that around 1 in 5 people live with chronic pain. They can cause physical, emotional and social discomfort, interfere with sleep, work, relationships with co-humans and cause depression or anxiety. Pain is not just a symptom – it can become a separate chronic condition requiring targeted treatment.

What happens during a visit to an algologist?

During the visit, the algologist:

  1. Thoroughly questions the patient about pain — intensity, localization, character, duration and impact on daily life, such as their ability to work during pain.
  2. Analyses previous examinations and treatment results – it is recommended to bring the findings and other health-related documents of all previous doctors.
  3. Carries out a clinical examination and, if necessary, refers to additional examinations.
  4. Develops an individualised treatment plan.

Modern treatment methods

Modern algology uses a variety of approaches, including:

  • Pharmacotherapy: painkillers, antidepressants, anticonvulsant medicines;
  • Local blockages: precise drug delivery around a damaged nerve (often under ultrasonic or X-ray control);
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation;
  • Psychological therapy: cognitive behavioural therapy;

Minimally invasive procedures including radio frequency ablation, neuromodulation;
multidisciplinary approach – cooperation with physiotherapist, psychologist, neurologist, etc.

Don't accept pain as part of life!

Chronic pain should not be accepted as an inevitable part of life. They are treatable, and even if it is impossible to get rid of suffering completely, modern medicine allows them to be greatly reduced. Early algologist’s help will avoid pain growing chronic and improve treatment outcomes.
