Abdominal ultrasonography is a painless and non-invasive visual diagnostic technique that allows the status of abdominal organs to be evaluated. It is one of the most commonly used tests to detect or monitor various acute or chronic health problems.
During the examination, the abdominal organs – liver, gallbladder, pancreas, kidneys, spleen and bladder – are evaluated with an ultrasound probe. Ultrasonic waves allow you to determine the size, shape, structure of organs and detect possible deviations. The examination is harmless and also suitable for children and pregnant women.
When is abdominal USG recommended?
- If there is abdominal or back pain
- If a fever or indigestion of uncertain origin has been observed
- Preventively – yearly
- If chronic conditions are known (e.g. liver, kidney, bile duct diseases)
The USG makes it possible to detect:
- Gallstones, kidney stones
- Changes in organ structure, size or function
- Cysts, benign and malignant formations
- Inflammation or chronic diseases
- Post-trauma damage (tears, bruises)
Duration of examination
About 15 minutes
Preparation
For 2-3 days prior to the examination, it is recommended to avoid gas-producing products: fresh or fermented vegetables (e.g. sour cabbage), fruits and juices. You must fast before the examination - do not eat for at least 5-6 hours before. Drinking only water is recommended. If a bladder or prostate exam is intended, you should arrive with full bladder - up to 1 litre of water should be drunk about 1 hour before the exam. The medicine can continue to be used as normal with water.
